Hm.  Now I'm very puzzled...

When it freezes, I tried echoing characters (via a remote xterm) to the 
console (ttyv*)... even that fails.

I enabled the debug options to have the keyboard drivers report every 
keystroke to the syslog.  Indeed, it stops seeing them.  But it doesn't 
seem likely for an 8042 problem to affect the output as well...

I suspect, now, that something DF is doing is causing VMware to start 
ignoring it's console emulation.  Unfortunately, that will be far more 
difficult to debug.
