Doubtful; this definitely seems (or seemed) related to 8042 handling.

I discovered that I was still trying to load the VMware tools driver for 
FreeBSD (which worked many moons ago, but has segfaulted for months 
now).  Removing this seems to have done the trick.  I suspect that some 
VMware shim managed to get wedged in the input code.

At any rate, I had no need for VMware tools since I'm not running X, so...
