Switching to timer 1 seems to fix my problem, and I don't have any
stability issues (yet).

Yeah, ACPI was flaky from the start so I disabled it.  I'll try seeing what
I can do to use the ACPI timer when I get some time.

But... finally a usable X... Major Thanks!
