Is there a cleaner way to express this with Makefile
variable expansion syntax?

 sed -e 's,[^/]*/,../,g' -e 's,[^/]*$,..,'

eg

 ls `cat CVS/Repository | sed -e 's,[^/]*/,../,g' -e 's,[^/]*$,..,'`

for discovering the path to the top level Makefile in a cvs checkout,
for make -f, or maybe there is a better way to navigate there?
