As discussed off-line, DragonFlyBSD, or any other BSD, already does this 
at least as well as, if not considerably better than Linux.

Note, for example:

- that in the interval between make installkernel and make installworld 
one is running the new kernel with (most of) the rest of the world still 
not applied,

- that both binary updates and using a spearate 'build box' then rolling 
out only what one needs have long been a part of the production *BSD 
environment.

Swapping between kernel and kernel.old or kernel.prev is nothing new, 
nor is scp'ing a new kernel (only), or a selected binary or several out 
to remote boxen.

Can DragonFlyBSD further improve on this?   Absolutely!

Would it be wiser to NOT try to be quite so across-the-span-of-years 
compatible?  Certainly!
