Coming from FreeBSD 5.3, you will have to recompile / reinstall.
If you upgrade from 4.10, you don't need to rebuild normal applications,
just those depending on OS near parts (e.g. programs dealing with process
lists, CAM etc.). If / when the threading work for userland starts, there
will definitely be a libc major bump, which will be used to clean up some
cruft too and prepare a better future handling.

Does the wheel mouse work in FreeBSD 4.10? Does it work if you use XFree86
and not X.org?
