Can't get splash screen to work

I followed the instructions on shiningsilence to get the dfly splash screen
working.  The boot manager comes up, and I either hit F1 or let it time out.
The kernel loads, and I see the vesa module load as well.  But then, the
ascii screen comes up with boot options, and I either select one or let it
time out.  Then the kernel loads as usual.

What could be wrong?
