Requiring -rpath is and was the default on a number of Unix platforms. The canonical exceptions are Linux and FreeBSD. That the former is clueless I don't have to say. The latter inherited it from a.out and never switched. I don't think it is a good base to reason upon given all the other clutches kept e.g. not using normal ELF naming for libraries etc.

Isn't it possible to have an implicit -rpath setting? So for instance, if I link -L/usr/lib/foo -lfoo that the binary will get /usr/lib/foo as rpath (if libfoo was found there).


With this we could get away from the ld cache.
