Softupdates provides us with very high performance for certain
types of filesystem activities but it's very, very complex code and a
ton of bugs have been fixed over the years (and plenty more probably
still there waiting to be found). It's kinda like a house of cards...
as long as everything works perfectly as the algorithms expect then
you are ok, but if the disk image diverges from the expectation all
hell can break loose. Unlike the original fsck, there is very little
redundancy in FreeBSD's background fsck.
