XFree86 Lock up

I have a DFBSD system built from FreeBSD 4.8 as the starting point -- 
but XFree86 doesn't work any more, it just locks up, is this a known 
issue?

My only two floppy disks are corrupt so I can't install 4.9 (I know that 
sounds hopeless).

Basically, what I'm asking here is: if I blow the money on some new 
floppy disks, will starting from 4.9 fix the problem?  If it isn't going 
to fix the problem (and this is a known baddie) then I'll save the money 
for food (don't ask).
