By the content of recent bug posts I suspect this is being worked on but, just in case...
Fresh DF install from 2/29 live-cd allowed me to buildworld and build kernel using gcc3. However, xfree86-4 does not compile with either gcc3 or gcc2. gcc3 gives the imake problem, gcc2 spins in a loop trying to config ( I think in the dfport override ). I'm sorry I don't have time at the moment to fix this or do anything other than report.

Can you try to install fontconfig and Xft before? There is some problem
with autoconf wanting to recreate the Makefiles, but I don't really know
why esp. since we don't have overriden those ports. Of course if you can
solve this problem, it would make live easier :) I just don't want to
spend that time, since the problem only exists if the ports are build as
part of the dependency installation of another port.

I tried this, and found something weird:

Xft depends on imake-4, which wouldn't install because 'work/xc/config/date.def' and 'version.def' were dead links. I simply linked them to files with suitable names (xc/.../hw/xf86Date.h, xf86Version.h), and it installed just fine.

How can internal softlinks in the X source archives point the wrong way?
